DAY THREE OF THE O’NEILL COLD WATER CLASSIC PRESENTED BY JEEP® BRAND

Move To Waddell Creek Proves to Be an Excellent Decision for Third Day of Contest

Santa Cruz, Calif., October 21, 2005 – The O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep® Brand, the third and final stop of the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series survived another day of competition, going mobile and moving north to Waddell Creek, Big Basin National Park. Surfers made the most of the challenging conditions, maintained their composure and relied upon their skills to get through today’s heats.

After assessing the conditions in the morning, contest organizers elected to move to Waddell Creek for the start of day three’s competition. The first northwest swell of the season is scheduled to fill in late Saturday night and bring six to ten foot sets to Steamer Lane for the remaining rounds and finals.

Rob Machado was once again on a roll in heat one with a seamless performance. He snapped off the top and then reeled through two more big slashes before slamming the door on the inside to earn a solid 8.33. Machado then went back to work on his second wave, taking off on a right and generating an incredible amount of speed for a trio of backhand slams that earned him a 6.27, cementing his first-place finish. “Out here everyone can get waves,” said Machado of the decision to move the Cold Water Classic to Waddell Creek. “When it’s small at the Lane it turns into a situation where whoever gets the one and probably only good wave that comes through wins the heat. That really isn’t a surf competition. Moving up here was a good call.”

Heat two saw young South African Jordy Smith work the conditions to his advantage, posting a 7.83 and a 5.17 with a series of vertical maneuvers. Looking cool and calculated, Smith turned in a rousing performance to take the win. Contest savvy Casey Brown moved into second place over Peter Mussio in the last minute of the heat after an interference call on Mussio.

In heat four, Ventura’s Jeremy Ryan launched a big forehand air on the end section of a small running left for a 7.33, a score that would put him into the top spot. Josh Mulcoy bumped Homer Henard from second place, dropping into his last wave seconds before the buzzer and putting together a 5.83 to advance.

Local sensation Bud Freitas continued to dominate, turning in another commanding performance in heat six taking first place with a series of powerful lip-bashes and slams late in the heat.

In the last heat of the day, Floridian gulf coaster Sterling Spencer felt right at home in the small beach break conditions and easily claimed first, while Justin Swartz pushed through in second.

The contest will resume tomorrow 8:00 a.m. with the remaining eight heats of round four and 16 heats of round five. The location will be confirmed at 7:30 a.m., based on the behavior of the swell and fog. Should the conditions at Steamer Lane not be contestable, the event will move to Waddell Creek for Saturday’s competition. Conditions for Saturday will remain in the 1-3' range at Steamer Lane. The first major northwest winter swell is on the way from a storm originating in the Gulf of Alaska that has generated seas up to 40’. The swell will begin to show late Saturday building rapidly during the morning hours Sunday. Forecasters expect this swell to increase quickly throughout the day producing 6-10' surf for the final day of competition at Steamer Lane.
